आकाशझेप – चित्रदर्शी शौर्यगाथा | Aakashzep – A Vivid Saga of Valor

‘बिंगो’ या टोपणनावाने सुपरिचित असलेल्या भूषणजींचे केवळ त्यांच्या बी. एन. गोखले या नावावरून हे टोपणनाव पडले नाही तर या नावाला वैमानिक क्षेत्रात अनेक अर्थच्छटा आहेत. त्याविषयी त्यांनी या पुस्तकात लिहिले आहे. आपल्या झुंजार वडिलांच्या आठवणी जागवताना आचार्य अत्रे यांनी ‘नवयुग’च्या तीन अंकात ‘सत्यसृष्टीतला झुंजार डिटेक्टिव्ह’ ही लेखमाला लिहिल्याचे ते समप्रमाण आणि गौरवाने सांगतात. ज्यांच्या कुटुंबातील सर्व सदस्यांच्या श्वासाश्वासात देशसेवाच आहे अशा गोखले दाम्पत्याने लिहिलेल्या या पुस्तकातून जाज्ज्वल्य देशाभिमानाची प्रचिती येते.

ग्लायडिंगच्या एका अनुभवानंतर खट्टु झाल्यावर फ्लाइट लेफ्टनंट मेनेझीस भूषणजींना म्हणतात, ‘‘बिंगो, मला माहीत आहे, भविष्यात तू खूप उंच उंच भरारी घेणार आहेस! पण एक लक्षात ठेव, जे वर जाते त्याला खाली यावेच लागते. म्हणूनच कितीही उंच उडालास तरी पाय मात्र जमिनीवर घट्ट रोवलेले पाहिजेत…’’

भूषणजी ही आठवण जागवून लिहितात, ‘त्यांचे बोलणे ऐकून माझी नाराजी कुठल्या कुठे पळून गेली. जीवनामध्ये उंचच उंच भरारी घेण्याचा निर्धार त्यावेळी कायम झाला आणि जीवनात अहंकाराला कधीही बळी न पडण्याचादेखील.. आपण कितीही मोठे झालो, गगनाला गवसणी घातली तरी समाजाचे ऋण लक्षात ठेवायचे, शक्य तितकी समाजसेवा करायची, देशसेवा करायची हे तत्त्व मनाशी नक्की झाले.’ हाच मंत्र त्यांनी आजतागायत जपल्याचे त्यांच्या आजवरच्या वाटचालीवरून दिसून येते.

वायूदलाविषयी आपल्या प्रत्येकाच्या मनात प्रचंड औत्सुक्य, जिज्ञासा असते. अशा वायूसेनेचे उपप्रमुख होण्यापर्यंत ज्यांनी उत्तुंग भरारी घेतली असेल त्यांचे आयुष्य किती थरारक आणि रोमांचकारी असेल? या पुस्तकातील पानापानातून ते दिसून येते आणि आपण थक्क होतो. मुख्य म्हणजे भूषणजी आणि मेघनाताईंनी या पुस्तकात जी लेखनशैली वापरली आहे त्यात कुठेही तांत्रिकपणा किंवा रूक्षपणा नाही. या सगळ्या घटना आपल्या डोळ्यासमोर घडत आहेत, इतके वास्तवदर्शी चित्र त्यांनी त्यांच्या विलक्षण शब्दसामर्थ्याने उभे केले आहे. याच्या जोडीलाच भरपूर छायाचित्रे, रेखाटने, आकृत्या आणि क्यु आर कोड स्कॅनर दिल्याने निर्मितीमूल्याच्या दृष्टिनेही पुस्तकाने आकाशझेप घेतली आहे.

बागडोगरा येथे असताना फ्लाईंग ऑफिसर विजय राजन या आपल्या सहकारी मित्राच्या झालेल्या अपघाती मृत्युचे वर्णन त्यांनी केले आहे. विमानातून इजेक्ट करताना पॅराशूट सोडतेवेळी उंचीचा, हवेचा अंदाज चुकल्याने पाण्यात न पडता ते नदीच्या काठावर पडले आणि अंतर्गत रक्तस्त्राव होऊन त्यांचा मृत्यू झाला. असे प्रसंग वाचताना ही मंडळी त्यांच्या प्राणाची बाजी लावून देशसेवेसाठी जे बलिदान देतात त्याची जाणीव होते आणि वाचक अंमर्मुख होतात.

1971 सालच्या बांग्लादेश युद्धातील ऐतिहासिक विजय, युद्धानंतर फ्लाइंग इन्स्ट्रक्टर स्कूल कोर्ससाठी झालेली निवड, तिथले प्रशिक्षण आणि अनुभव हे सारे मुळातच वाचण्यासारखे आहे. एफआयएसमध्ये पहिले आल्यानंतर ‘फ्लाइंगचे स्वप्न पाहणारा पहिला माणूस’ म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असलेल्या ग्रीक पुराणकथेतील ‘इकॅरस’ या कारागिराचा पुतळा असलेली ट्रॉफी त्यांना मिळाली. त्यानंतर 1973 साली नव्यानेच सुरू झालेल्या हैदराबादजवळील दुंडिगल येथील एअर फोर्स अ‍ॅकॅडमीमध्ये त्यांची पोस्टिंग झाली. तिथल्या विद्यार्थ्यांना शिकवतानाच्या अनुभवाविषयी ते लिहितात, ‘विद्यार्थ्यांना शिकवताना बारीकसारीक चुका कशा होऊ शकतात, हे समजावून सांगणे आणि ते सुद्धा स्वतःवर संयम ठेवून, शांतपणे सांगण्याचे आव्हान असते. विद्यार्थ्याला सक्षम बनविण्याची प्रक्रिया करताना प्रशिक्षकाला जर विद्यार्थ्याकडून चूक होत असेल तर कुठल्या क्षणाला स्वतःकडे विमानाचे नियंत्रण घ्यायचे, तो क्षण निवडणे ही तारेवरची कसरत असते. विद्यार्थी त्या चुकीतून योग्य तो मार्ग काढून आणि प्रसंगावधान राखून जर परत अचूक फ्लाइंग करू शकला तर तुम्ही दिलेले प्रशिक्षण योग्य ठरते आणि जर विद्यार्थ्याच्या प्रत्येक चुकीनंतर इन्स्ट्रक्टर स्वतःकडे नियंत्रण घेऊ लागला तर विद्यार्थी एकटा कधीच फ्लाइंग करण्यास सक्षम होत नाही.’ हे निरीक्षण महत्त्वाचे तर आहेच पण अनेक क्षेत्रासाठी ते तंतोतंत लागू पडते.

‘एअरफोर्स हे माझे पहिले प्रेम आहे. माझे ध्येय हाच माझा ध्यास आहे. त्यामुळे स्नेहलता (लग्नाच्या आधीचे नाव) म्हणजे माझे दुसरे प्रेम असेल’ असे त्याकाळी धाडसाने सांगून ‘शुभमंगल’ करणार्‍या भूषणजींनी या प्रकरणाला ‘माय सेकंड लव्ह’ असेच म्हटले आहे. या प्रकरणापासून मेघनाताईंनी त्यांचे अनुभव मांडले असून त्याला त्यांनी ‘माय फर्स्ट लव्ह’ असे यथोचित शीर्षक दिले आहे. या पुस्तकात इटॅलिक स्वरूपात (तिरकी अक्षरे) जो मजकूर आहे तो सहलेखिका म्हणून मेघनाताईंनी लिहिला आहे.

1971च्या युद्धाच्या वेळी बांगलादेशातील ‘मेघना’ नदीला ओलांडून जाणार्‍या शत्रूंचा गोखले आणि त्यांच्या सहकार्‍यांनी निःपात केला होता. म्हणून त्यांनी स्नेहलता यांचे नाव लग्नानंतर बदलून मेघना असे ठेवले. लग्नात गोखले यांनी घास भरवताना उखाण्याऐवजी ‘तेरे मेरे सपने, अब एक रंग है’ हे गाणे म्हटले. देशप्रेमाने भारावलेल्या भूषण आणि मेघना गोखले यांनी या पुस्तकाद्वारे त्यांच्या खडतर जीवनप्रवासाबरोबरच त्याकाळचा असा अनोखा इतिहासही वेगळ्या ढंगात शब्दबद्ध केला आहे.

जीवनात सत्याची कास धरणे किती महत्त्चाचे असते हे ‘मृत्युचा निसटचा स्पर्श’ या प्रकरणात सांगताना गोखले लिहितात, ‘आयुष्यामध्ये कधीही खोटे बोलून, आपली जबाबदारी, चूक मान्य न करता दुसर्‍याच्या अंगावर ढकलून पुढे जाण्याचा प्रयत्न करू नका कारण एक ना एक दिवस हे सत्य बाहेर येतेच. खोटे बोलून तुम्ही तात्कालिक फायदा करून घेऊ शकाल मात्र त्याचा कायमस्वरूपी लाभ होऊ शकणार नाही.’

वैमानिकाची पत्नी होणे म्हणजे कोणत्या दिव्यातून जावे लागते हे मेघनाताईंनी अनेक उदाहरणाद्वारे लिहिले आहे. ‘जीवनात कोणतीही परिस्थिती आली, कितीही अडचणी आल्या तरी मी सदैव साथ देईन, बरोबर असेन. पुढे जे काही होईल त्याला आपण मिळून तोंड देऊ,’ असे धीरोदात्तपणे सांगत प्रत्येक अडचणीच्या काळात मेघनाताईंनी भूषणजींची खंबीर पाठराखण केली आहे. पतीपत्नीच्या नात्यातील हाच विश्वास ही समर्थ साथ हेच तर आपल्या आदर्श भारतीय संस्कृतीचे प्रतीक आहे. या पुस्तकातून ते वेळोवेळी अधोरेखित होते.

इराकमधील वास्तव्य, मुक्काम पोस्ट हिंडन आणि भटिंडा, वेलिंस्टन स्टाफ कॉलेज कोर्स, 221 स्कॉड्रनचे नेतृत्व ही प्रकरणेही वाचनीय आहेत. अमेरिकेतील 1991-92चे एअर वॉर, इजिप्तमधील तीन वर्षे, ऑपरेशन पराक्रम अशी प्रकरणे आपल्याला वेगळ्याच विश्वात घेऊन जातात. वायुसेना उपप्रमुख ही तर प्रत्येकासाठी अभिमानास्पद बाब आहे. या पुस्तकात हे सगळं वाचताना स्वाभाविकपणे आपल्या मनातही देशप्रेमाचे अनोखे स्फुल्लिंग चेतते. देशसेवा करतानाचे अनुभव, कौटुंबिक आठवणी आणि निवृत्तीनंतरचे आयुष्य अशा सगळ्या आघाड्यांवरील अनुभवकथन ओघवत्या आणि चित्रदर्शी शैलीत केल्याने या लढवय्या सेनानीचा इतिहास प्रभावी शैलीत शब्दबद्ध झाला आहे.
